CSK fans had a field day on social media after RCB’s dream run in the IPL 2024 season ended following a four-wicket loss to RR in the IPL 2024 Eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. Rajasthan managed to overcome their demons and keep their hopes of reaching the final alive and despite a remarkable six-game winning streak, Bengaluru’s run ended in heartbreak, as winning nine in a row to clinch the trophy always seemed a bit too much. This game was all about Rajasthan turning a corner, having been on a four-game losing streak but now feeling much better.
Chasing 173 for the win, Rajasthan got off to a rollicking start with boundaries flowing from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tom Kohler-Cadmore. However, a slump in the middle overs saw set batters Jaiswal and Sanju Samson get out, followed by a run-out of Dhruv Jurel that created some panic. Riyan Parag then got crucial runs but was dismissed, as was Shimron Hetmyer. Ultimately, Rovman Powell, who seemed to be the coolest head in the stadium, kept his composure and secured the win in the 19th over.
IPL 2024 Eliminator, RR vs RCB: Highlights | Scorecard
Bengaluru knew they were a few runs short and needed early wickets during the Powerplay, but it didn’t happen, and sloppy fielding didn’t help either. There was a resurgence in the middle overs as they picked up a couple of wickets, with Cameron Green bowling a fine spell that put the opposition in a tight spot. A fabulous run-out by Virat Kohli further galvanized Bengaluru, but with the runs required quite low, they needed multiple wickets in an over. Mohammed Siraj got a couple of wickets in the 18th over, but by then the damage was done. Rovman Powell wiped off the remaining 13 runs in the next over, and just like that, Bengaluru were eliminated, only days after sealing a playoff berth sensationally.
Notably, RCB’s win over CSK had sparked a city-wide carnival in Bengaluru among RCB fans, who even blocked roads at one stage to celebrate the team’s sixth successive win and a remarkable finish in the final four. The following day, the cricketer-turned-commentator took a sly dig at RCB fans while he was offering his expert analysis on Star Sports. “RCB have already won the IPL. We saw what was the reaction in the streets of Bengaluru, in fact CSK should give one of their trophies to RCB so they can parade it,” Rayudu had said after RCB knocked out CSK. So the fans took to social media to call out RCB loyalists for celebrating too early.
The murmured chants of “Ee Sala Cup Namde” fade into the neighboring Sabarmati River as RCB fans are forced to lick their wounds once again. This game, mirroring their season, saw them resurrected from the dead on multiple occasions, but ultimately their sloppy fielding early on came back to cost them.
