On this day, Sanjay Dutt graced his Instagram with a heartfelt tribute, commemorating his mother Nargis’s 95th birth anniversary. Revered as an unparalleled thespian, Nargis’s illustrious career spanned a multitude of genres, from lighthearted comedies to intense dramas. Her cinematic journey commenced as a lead in the early 1940s and continued until her swan song in the psychological thriller “Raat Aur Din” in 1967. Her nascent appearance on screen was at the tender age of five in “Talash-E-Haq” (1935), with her substantial acting voyage beginning with “Tamanna” (1942).
In a poignant Instagram post, Sanjay Dutt shared an image of himself with Nargis. His caption read, “Happy birthday mama, I miss you every day, every minute, every second. I wish you were here, guiding me in the life you envisioned for me. I hope I’ve made you proud. Love you and miss you, mama.” His wife, Manayata, responded with heart emojis, reflecting the emotional weight of the post.
The early 1980s were a somber period when Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, leading to her demise on May 3, 1981. The love story of Nargis and Sunil Dutt is the stuff of legend, sparked by a fire on the set of their 1957 film “Mother India,” where Sunil gallantly rescued her. This shared ordeal brought them closer, culminating in their marriage on March 11, 1958.
Nargis’s portrayal of Radha in the Academy Award-nominated “Mother India” (1957) is iconic, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her appearances became sporadic in the 1960s, with notable works including the drama “Raat Aur Din” (1967), for which she was awarded the inaugural National Film Award for Best Actress.
Together with Sunil, Nargis, Sanjay Dutt established the Ajanta Arts Culture Troupe, enlisting prominent actors and singers to perform in border regions. The Best Feature Film on National Integration at the Annual Film Awards is named the Nargis Dutt Award in her honor.
In the early 1970s, Nargis took on a philanthropic role as the first patron of The Spastic Society of India, garnering acclaim for her social work, which led to her Rajya Sabha nomination in 1980. Nargis Dutt was the second actor, after Prithvi Raj Kapoor, to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha, serving from 1980 to 1981. Her contributions were recognized with the Padma Shri in 1958. In the biographical film “Sanju,” actress Manisha Koirala portrayed Nargis, immortalizing her legacy on screen.
