NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promising to scrap the Agniveer scheme if the Congress comes to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at a public meeting in Haryana’s Mahendragarh, Gandhi accused PM Modi of neglecting the welfare of Indian soldiers under the scheme.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reduced India’s Jawans to mere laborers with his Agniveer scheme. The Army does not endorse this scheme; it is a creation of the Prime Minister’s Office. Once the Congress forms the government at the Centre, we will discard this scheme,” Gandhi asserted.
Continuing his critique of the Modi government, Gandhi highlighted issues faced by farmers in Haryana and accused the government of favoring billionaires over the agricultural community.
“The farmers of Haryana toil in the fields for the nation’s sustenance. However, the Modi government has stripped away their rights and abolished the Land Tribunal Bill to benefit the wealthy. The controversial farm laws were also imposed, but eventually, the government had to backtrack,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi further lambasted PM Modi for allegedly favoring wealthy individuals by waiving their loans, labeling it as an insult to the farming community.
“During the tenure of the United Progressive Alliance, loans were waived off for farmers. However, PM Modi has chosen to waive the loans of 22 affluent individuals instead. This blatant favoritism is a slap in the face of our farmers,” Gandhi emphasized.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections for the 10 parliamentary constituencies of Haryana are scheduled to be held in a single phase on May 25. In the previous 2019 elections, the BJP secured all 10 seats in the state, while in 2014, the BJP won 7 seats, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won 2, and the Congress managed to secure just one seat.
The ongoing elections, conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, will culminate in the announcement of results on June 4.
