The anticipated day for the Supreme Court’s final ruling on NEET was today, July 18. But no decision was made in the end. Rather, the following hearing was set by the court for Monday, July 22, at 10:30 AM. The issue will be taken up first thing in the morning, and before noon, a decision about the reexamination of NEET is anticipated.
Morning Meeting: Important Items
Unexpectedly, the hearing started at 11:04 AM as Item No. 5 on the agenda. The whole morning session was devoted to the case discussion. Among the main concerns raised were the vagueness around the grace marks granted to 1,563 pupils and the guidelines for allocating them. In spite of this, these kids took another exam, the results of which were released, by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
131 applications were filed in favor of the re-conduct of NEET, compared to 254 petitions against it. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) asked questions during the session regarding the correction window for switching exam centers between July 9 and 10. Data regarding the number of students who switched centers over this time period was requested from the NTA. Furthermore, it was mentioned that a total of 108,000 seats are up for selection, consisting of 56,000 government and 52,000 private seats.
Afternoon Session: Comprehensive Agenda
The court resumed its session after lunch. There was no definitive decision made regarding the re-NEET after lengthy deliberations. On Monday, July 22, the court reiterated that this would be the first topic discussed, and a ruling is anticipated before lunch.
Important conversations revolved around the exam breaches at the Hazaribagh and Patna centers. The Hazaribagh case was examined in great detail, including the transportation of the exam paper from the Canara and SBI banks to the testing facility. Unauthorized access to the question papers was evident in the CCTV film, along with serious security protocol violations.
The court ordered the NTA to post the entire findings, with student identities hidden but comprehensive center-by-center analytics, on its website. The deadline was originally scheduled on Friday at 5 PM, but it was extended to Saturday at 12 PM when the NTA requested more time.
Subsequent Actions and Consequences
Prior to the upcoming hearing, the Supreme Court requested reports from the EOU and the Patna police. The proceedings of today indicated a limited probability of a re-NEET because massive exam leaking was not definitively demonstrated. The breaches seemed to be restricted to particular centers.
In summary
On July 22, the Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its final ruling on the re-examination, making it a pivotal day for those aspiring to be on the NEET. This decision will have a big effect on the test-taking procedure and the students.
