RCB’s hopes of winning the elusive IPL trophy came to an end on Wednesday, May 22. The former finalists were knocked out as early as the Eliminator of the IPL 2024 after they lost to Rajasthan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. RCB’s incredible run — a six-match winning run — came to a heartbreaking end as the Faf du Plessis-led side were not able to build on their momentum in the knockout stages of the tournament.

IPL 2024 Eliminator, RR vs RCB: Highlights | Scorecard

RCB were not able to step up under pressure as they were beaten by 6 wickets by RR in the first a potentially three knockout games. The batting failed big time in the crunch game as RCB managed to post only 172 for 8 in 20 overs, which was a below-par total, considering the dew at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Notably, RCB were knocked out by the Royals in the 2022 season in the Qualifier 2 after they defeated Lucknow in the Eliminator. In 2020 and 2021 too, RCB were knocked out in the Eliminator, the first of the three playoff matches. RCB last reached the final under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in 2016.

Over the years, RCB have had some of the finest batters, including the likes of AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and Shane Watson among others. However, RCB are among the only three teams from the inaugural edition to have not won a title along with Punjab and Delhi.

RCB HANDED KNOCKOUT PUNCH

Virat Kohli managed 33 on the board and Rajat Patidar 34 before a late cameo from Mahipal Lomror, but they were not enough for RCB to bat Rajasthan out of the contest. Rajasthan rode on an all-round bowling effort, led by their veteran R Ashwin to restrict the powerful Bengaluru line-up.

On the other hand, Rajasthan were more calm and composed in their chase, not letting the pressure of their winless run in the lead-up to the playoffs affect them. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer played key roles in their successful chase.
